Oil paints usually offer rich, vibrant colors and have a slow drying time, allowing artists to blend, re think, and manipulate the paint on the canvas. Oil paint is believed to have been used throughout history, but became widely used during the Northern and Italian Renaissance periods. This medium provides a wide range of textures and is favored by many artists for its durability, and glossy finish.

Watercolor is a medium that uses pigments suspended in a water-based solution. By using brushes, the artist apply the paint on specific paper, and the transparent nature of watercolor allows for diffusion of colors and delicate washes and subtle layering. Watercolor paintings often have a fluid and ethereal quality and fast dry effect. Watercolor paper may need to be stretched prior to being used, this process involves completely wetting the paper and then drying it prior to painting to prevent unwanted wrinkling.
